The Week in Womble aka Battery is Charged

Helloooooo!

I skipped a weekend and to be honest I was zonked. Running on fumes a month meant I as more than ready for a break and this turned into a more relaxed week than I was expecting. Partly this was down to a two day storm keeping me at home and also that I had my first covid jab and needed a couple of days to get over it. But I did get some actual time to rest and read. Not as much tv as I was hoping for so that’s something to plan in my schedule. Monday becomes the one-year anniversary of me staying at home from work. It has been a weird and unusual twelve months and still a way to go.

Things I listened to

Breaking the Glass Slipper – catching up on some very good interviews this week including a great one from Aliya Whiteley!

Skiffy and Fanty – A torture cinema episode that greatly explains the problems of Batman Vs Superman – cathartic

Fiction Fans – trying a new book podcast talking about their top ten books! I really enjoyed this!

What I’ve Been Watching

Wandavision – I enjoyed the finale. For me character arc beats plot and I personally thought the lead character was pretty much punished for their unconscious decision to rewrite the laws of the universe – a tale of grief was not what Io expected and this worked weirdly beautifully!

Subjective Chaos Awaits

This month I’ll be focusing on the Best Fantasy nominees I’ve not yet read

Best Fantasy Nominee - Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse – highly intricate plotting and character work to create a fascinating start to a fantasy series. I love tales that break the world apart.

What Have I been Reading and Reviewing?

Skin for Skin by Terry Grimwood – interesting fantasy tale of a war between hell and heaven but didn’t quite hit the landing for me

Brother Red by Adrian Selby – another excellent epic fantasy tale set in the same universe but with different characters and decades later. Highly impressed

Record of a Spaceborn Few/The Galaxy, and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers – I’ve now finished the Wayfarers series. Just what I needed this week to recharge the brain - reviews very soon

Clockwork Sister by M E Rodman – an unusual tale of fantasy clones a decent read but not quite my thing

Hag - Forgotten Folktales Retold edited by Professor Carolyne Larrington - a great selection of old tales reworked for the 2020s and I was very impressed with the approaches

Advanced Triggernometry by Stark Holborn – review next month but it was AWESOME

Redder Days by Sue Rainsford – Review to come I liked it but didn’t quite work for me in a tale of apocalyptic literary horror

What am I Going to Read?

In the near future a street, an inn, love, bones, a coast, peace and a sea!

And so much more!! Good luck for the future – we will get there. See you in a week!
