The Golden Key by Marian Womack - I was hugely impressed by this tale of ghosts, mediums and intrigue with touch of fae
Saving Lucia by Anna Vaught - One of the best reading experiences I had this year a weird fantastical tale exploring mental illness and how women have been treated (or maltreated for many years) unusual and powerful
Threading The Labyrinth by Tiffani Angus - A wonderfully strange tale of a garden and its owners but lopping through past and present in a very unusual way. A writer to watch!
The Unspoken Name by A K Larkwood - a huge ambitious fantasy series begins and did i mention that the lead is a lesbian orc who was a former evil henchwoman?
Beneath the Rising by Premee Mohamed - excellent blurring of sf, fantasy and horror as well as friendships in this intriguing tale
We Ride The Storm by Devin Madson - an inventive epic fantasy series with added decapitations. I’m very much looking forward tot he rest of this series
The City We Became by N K Jemisin - A new series from one of the genre’s best authors and I think tackles some very key 2020 issues
Divine Heretic by Jaime Lee Moyer - how about something different a strange tale of Joan of Arc and the fae
Grave Secrets by Alice James - a thrilling, funny, sexy and smart tale of a new necromancer. Well worth your time starting on this one
The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson - a wonderfully atmospheric dark fantasy that tackles intolerance by an author I think we need to watch
The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart - a wonderfully inventive fantasy series begins with asian inspired worlds and a compelling mystery
Phoenix Extravagant by Yoon Ha lee - I love fantasy that explores what happens after the battle/revolution and this is very thought provoking
The Wall by Gautam Bhatia - and in a similar vein I loved this novel for exploring free speech and societal changes
The Thief on The Winged Horse by Kate Mascarenhas - a hugely inventive contemporary fantasy tale that explores sexism and industry
The Wolf of Oren-Yaro by K S Villaso - This series has given me one of my new favourite characters in fantasy and its wonderful. The sequel is out now too!
The Last Smile in Sunder City by Luke Arnold - and this was a breath of fresh air with a new lead detective who understands his privilege (Dresden could learn from that)
Legacy of Ash by Matthew Ward - and this was a very smart piece of epic fantasy and the sequel Legacy of Steel is out now too!
